Dezeen Showroom: 1970s-style curves meet creative textural contrast in the Nina lounge chair, designed by Patricia Urquiola for furniture brand Andreu World. The Nina lounge chair has a bulbous, organic shape that looks almost pebble-like from the front, which flows in a continuous, looping curve around itself, forming a sculptural back. Andreu World says the shape was inspired by the 1656 Diego Velázquez painting Las Meninas, where the subjects wear oversized, enveloping crinolines, as well as paying homage to the "expressive freedom" of 1970s furniture. Instead of being entirely upholstered, the chair features gentle juxtaposition from a hard structural back shell made of the Spanish brand's Pure ECO thermopolymer, produced from 100 per cent recycled polymer waste. This shell is available in a glossy or matt enamel finish and features a pockmarked organic relief reminiscent of stone. Inspired by surfaces shaped by water, it brings extra personality to the already commanding chair. Made from high-quality technical foams and carefully tailored upholstery, Patricia Urquiola intended for the Nina lounge chair to be used in both residential and professional environments, where its wide, armless seat invites easy repose.
