Clean lines, four wide drawers, and short angled legs gave this old mid-century dresser its simple shape, but its wood veneer had chips and divots hidden beneath a high-gloss finish. Restoring the original wood had been the plan until stripping exposed the damage. @makemeprettyagain Beth from Make Me Pretty Again repaired and sanded the veneer before taking the dresser in another direction. Gray paint covered the case, while yellow cherry blossoms spread across the handleless drawer fronts instead of leaving them one solid color. Branches connect blooms from one drawer to the next, so the design reads as one composition when the dresser is closed. Stencils established the flower placement, then individual blossoms received extra paint and shading to give them more variation. Hidden Veneer Damage Changed the Plan for This Mid-Century Dresser @makemeprettyagain Warm wood covered the dresser before work began, with no knobs or pulls breaking up the four broad drawer fronts. Straight edges and angled feet gave the case its mid-century profile. Plans called for refinishing the wood, but removing the glossy topcoat exposed chips and divots in the veneer. Filler repaired those areas before sanding created a smooth surface for paint. Gray Paint Covered the Repaired Wood @makemeprettyagain Gray replaced the original wood finish across the top, sides, and drawer fronts. Dark gaps between drawers remained visible, creating four horizontal bands across the otherwise plain surface. Cherry blossom stencils were positioned across those bands before the flowers went on. Several sections had to line up so branches could move from one drawer to another instead of forming separate decorations. Yellow Cherry Blossoms Spread Across Four Drawers @makemeprettyagain Brown branches start near the lower left corner, move through the center, then reach toward the upper right. Yellow blossoms appear at different points along the branches, leaving sections of gray exposed between clusters. No hardware interrupts the artwork. With the drawers closed, flowers and branches can cross the entire front without having to work around knobs or pulls. Stenciled Flowers Were Painted Again by Hand @makemeprettyagain Stencil shapes provided the outlines, but the yellow flowers were not left as identical flat impressions. Each blossom received more paint and shading after the stencil work was complete. Some petals have pale yellow edges, others carry warmer centers, and small buds surround the larger flowers. Brown branches provide enough contrast against the gray background to connect those separate clusters. Drawer Gaps Cut Through the Branches @makemeprettyagain Horizontal gaps remain part of the finished design rather than something the painter tried to disguise. Branches reach an edge, disappear into the opening, then continue across the drawer below. Closing all four drawers reconnects those sections. What could have been four separate floral motifs becomes one branch spreading across the dresser front. Gray Was Left Visible Around the Flowers @makemeprettyagain Cherry blossoms occupy much of the left and center sections without filling every open space. Gray remains visible around each branch, allowing the original shape of the wide drawer fronts to stay clear. Yellow also creates a sharp contrast without changing the dresser’s structure. Angled feet, flat fronts, and the rectangular case remain intact beneath the new finish. Mid-Century Shape Stayed Intact Beneath the Artwork @makemeprettyagain Placed indoors, the dresser still reads as a low mid-century case rather than a piece rebuilt around its new decoration. Nothing was added to the drawer fronts, and the existing feet remain below the case. Change comes from the repaired surface, gray background, and cherry blossom composition. Damage that prevented a straightforward wood restoration became the reason to take the finish in another direction. Cherry Blossoms Turned the Drawer Fronts Into One Canvas @makemeprettyagain Before and after views show how little the dresser’s actual construction changed. Four drawers occupy the same positions, the feet remain exposed, and the case keeps the proportions it started with. What changes is how those separate parts read from the front. Yellow blossoms and brown branches ignore the drawer boundaries, connecting the full face through one design rather than assigning a pattern to each section.
