Local designer Veronica Mishaan has revamped a penthouse apartment with bursts of colour and animal prints in Bogotá, Colombia. The 580-square-metre apartment was redesigned to balance the needs of the family with the ability to host, while preserving and displaying the clients' art and antiques collection. The apartment overlooks the city's greenery and mountainscape, so the design team worked to frame the views and bring the outdoors into the space with floral motifs, foliage tones and custom oak floors and finishes. The design showcases the family's art and antique collection "Material choices, colours and window-oriented planning all reinforce the connection between the home and its natural context," said Mishaan. "We prioritised natural, tactile materials to reinforce warmth, longevity and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape." Smooth marmorino plaster in the living room and circulation spaces serves as a soft backdrop for art. Grasscloth wallpaper carries through the dining room, primary bedroom and family room for a subtle texture. In the first living area, an antique Aubusson rug pairs with a custom Lee Jofa wool bouclé sofa, mid-century armchairs from Donzella, the studio's signature hammed iron martini tables and artwork by Peter Halley. Bold colours and texture carry throughout the apartment In the office space, the studio lacquered the original built-in bookcases and panelling in deep blue to complement the blue-leopard Stark carpet. In the primary bedroom, Phillip Jeffries wallpaper envelops the room in rich indigo with pale blossoms that tie into the light pink of the patterned zellige travertine and marble tiles of the bathrooms. The team retained the original hand-painted sinks as a nod to the apartment's history. The dining room sets off an antique crystal and bronze chandelier with custom Schumacher light blue velvet dining chairs with leopard motifs and a soft coral wallpaper featuring tree branches. The team also created spaces that catered to the client's grandchildren with custom wooden bunks and a playroom with sage green millwork and bespoke children's furniture. "What makes this project unique is the confident, successful juxtaposition of multiple patterns, colours and furniture languages to create a cohesive, layered whole," she said. "That compositional balance, mixing antiques, contemporary art and locally made custom pieces, recurs throughout the apartment." Custom wooden bunk beds are also available for family Mishaan said that the biggest lesson this project reinforced was not to follow trends. "By prioritising lasting design principles, client needs, craft and locally made custom work, we produced a creative, authentic and unique home that will age well, a reminder to trust conviction over fashion in future projects."
