Lee Broom evokes 1970s glamour with The Chant Chambers installation

Designer Lee Broom has created an "atmospheric environment" in his Shoreditch showroom with The Chant Chambers, an installation showcasing his glass-block Chant lighting collection at London Design Festival. Designer Lee Broom has created an "atmospheric environment" in his Shoreditch showroom with The Chant Chambers, an installation showcasing his glass-block Chant lighting collection at London Design Festival. The Chant Chambers displays the modular light in a variety of forms – as a portable lamp, wall lamp, linear pendants and oversized chandeliers. Lee Broom added plinths and sculptures to his showroom All are presented inside Broom's showroom, where textured vertical screens create a series of interconnected spaces designed to have a cinematic atmosphere. The Chant Chambers, which Broom described as "an elegant yet surreal lounge," has wood-panelled walls and tactile wall-to-wall carpeting and features stone plinths and a number of sculptures. Wood panels and textured screens divide the space "I wanted the Chant Chambers to feel like an atmospheric environment rather than a display of individual lights," Broom told Dezeen. "The installation explores how the same cubic form can be transformed as it is repeated across a space, using different configurations to create a sense of discovery," he continued. "It also reflects the way our clients are looking for lighting that can be adapted specifically to their interiors rather than choosing a single fixed object." Glass-cube pendants were hung in lines to create an architectural feel Broom also used Chant lights in linear arrangements as geometric ceiling designs with an architectural feel. The moody, smoky colour palette of the installation was inspired by Chant's latest iteration – a smoked-glass finish in a darker tone than the previous design. "It has a depth and warmth that works particularly well with the design of Chant and it nods to the late 1970s, early 80s period when glass blocks were very prevalent in modern architecture." "The palette was developed around those darker, richer tones to create a space that feels alluring and atmospheric, while still allowing the geometry of the lighting to stand out," he continued. Broom drew on 1970s interiors for the installation Glamorous 1970s interiors have been making a comeback, with a number of designers looking to the decade for their interiors, as seen recently in a Marseille wine bar. Broom believes that his Chant light has played a part in this trend, especially when it comes to bringing geometric forms and glass blocks back into contemporary interiors. "Since I first introduced the original Chant Chandelier in 2022, those references have gained real momentum," he said. "What interests me is reinterpreting them rather than simply recreating the 1970s, giving those nostalgic materials a more contemporary expression." Wall sconces also decorate the space He argues that these types of interiors also help put the focus on the lighting. "This kind of aesthetic really allows lighting to take centre stage, not just through the fixtures themselves, but through the ambience they create," Broom said. At the end of The Chant Chambers installation, Broom placed a three-tier Chant chandelier to fully showcase the lighting collection.
