Worn finish, scratches, and marks covered this old oak dresser and matching tall chest, but much of the original wood was still worth showing. Instagram furniture artist @urukehu_jess kept that oak visible instead of covering both pieces with one paint color. After preparing the wood, she used layers of stain and dark color to create mountain ranges across the lower drawers. Mountains were not part of her original plan. She previously painted a mountain landscape across another old wood dresser, but this scene emerged as she worked. Set together, the two pieces create one landscape, while each has its own mountain scene when separated. Years of Wear Covered the Original Oak Dresser Scratches, worn patches, and marks cover the dresser top, with more signs of age across the drawer fronts. Three smaller drawers sit above two wide drawers, while the large mirror rises from the back. Oak grain remains visible through the old finish. Curved corners, dovetail drawer construction, metal pulls, and the shaped base give the dresser details that could be retained during the makeover. Prepared Oak Became the Base for the Mountain Design @urukehu_jess By the time the mountain work begins, the oak has been prepared and the old hardware removed from the drawer fronts. The lighter surface exposes the grain that will remain visible through much of the finished design. Brown stain is applied with a small brush to form irregular mountain ridges across the wood. Rather than masking the grain, the stain changes its tone while allowing the lines of the oak to show through. Mountain Layers Cross the Drawers and Case @urukehu_jess More mountain ranges appear as the design moves across the tall chest. Brown tones create separate ridges, while black fills the lowest section and continues across the drawer fronts, case, and feet. Drawer gaps do not determine where the peaks begin or end. Each ridge crosses those breaks, turning several drawer fronts and the surrounding frame into one landscape when the chest is closed. Two Pieces Create One Continuous Landscape @urukehu_jess Finished dresser and tall chest reveal how the mountain design connects the two pieces. Brown ridges rise through the middle, black mountains form the foreground, and exposed oak occupies the upper sections. Placed side by side, the peaks continue from one piece toward the other to create a broader landscape. Different heights and drawer arrangements remain visible, but the shared mountain layers make the furniture read as a set. Most of the Original Oak Remains Visible @urukehu_jess Closer view of the dresser shows how much wood was left uncovered. Oak grain runs across the upper drawers, curved frame, top, and side, then continues through the brown mountain layers below. Dark color is concentrated near the bottom instead of covering the entire case. Metal cup pulls return to the drawer fronts, sitting over both exposed wood and the landscape without hiding its larger shapes. Worn Oak Became a Mountain Dresser Set Before the makeover, scratches, worn patches, and an aging finish covered the oak dresser. Three smaller drawers sit across the top, with four larger drawer fronts below, while the round mirror rises from the shaped wood back. Mountain ranges now stretch across the lower half, with layers of brown stain allowing the oak grain to remain visible and black creating the darkest foreground.
