Tall upholstered headboards can hide a basic structure beneath the fabric. For this bedroom, the curved profile started with OSB cut into a shape wide enough for a full-size bed. @Tracy Laverty DIY blogger Tracy Laverty designed the headboard for her daughter’s bedroom makeover and enlisted her husband’s help to draw and cut the curved OSB base. From there, the rough board was covered with batting, coral fabric, and nailhead trim. Curves across the top make the finished piece look more complex than its construction suggests. Most of that shape comes from the original OSB profile, while upholstery softens the edges and hides the board underneath. Curves Were Drawn Before the OSB Was Cut @Tracy Laverty Headboard shape was planned before cutting began. Tracy’s husband used AutoCAD to draw the profile and establish dimensions for the full-size bed, though the same outline could be drawn and measured by hand. High shoulders rise on both sides before the top dips toward the center, creating a symmetrical outline that would remain visible after several layers covered the board. Jigsaw Cuts Turned the OSB Into a Headboard Shape @Tracy Laverty Half-inch OSB provided the rigid backing. Instead of building the curved perimeter from separate pieces, the entire profile was cut from the board with a jigsaw. Cutting the curves at this stage established the proportions of the finished headboard. Fabric and padding would change its surface, but not the silhouette. Batting Covered the Hard OSB Surface @Tracy Laverty Two layers of batting went over the cut board before fabric was added. The padding wrapped across the front and around the curved perimeter, turning the rigid backing into a cushioned surface. Extra material around the edges also gave the finished headboard a softer profile without requiring thick foam or a separate upholstered frame. Coral Fabric Wrapped Around the Curves @Tracy Laverty Fabric covered the batting and was pulled tight before being stapled at the back. Wrinkles were ironed out before cutting so they would not become trapped across the upholstered face. Curved sections needed extra attention. Small slits cut into the fabric at the back allowed it to follow the changing shape without bunching or creating folds along the front edge. Two Wood Supports Set the Headboard Height @Tracy Laverty Two 2x4s were attached behind the upholstered panel after the batting and fabric were in place. Their position determined how high the curved section would sit above the mattress. Keeping the supports behind the headboard also leaves the upholstered face uninterrupted, with no mounting hardware visible from the bed. Nailhead Trim Followed the Curved Edge @Tracy Laverty Flexible nailhead trim traced the perimeter instead of running across the center of the fabric. Measuring from the edge kept the spacing consistent as the trim moved around each curve. Two layers of batting beneath the fabric meant the tacks needed to be driven through a thicker upholstered edge before reaching the OSB backing. Raw OSB Disappeared Behind the Upholstery @Tracy Laverty Once covered, little about the front suggests the structure began as OSB. Coral fabric stretches across the broad center while metallic nailhead trim emphasizes the outline cut at the beginning of the project. Tall proportions also change the wall behind the bed, extending the headboard past the pillows and toward the artwork rather than stopping close to mattress height. Curved Sides Frame the Bed @Tracy Laverty Raised corners give the headboard more presence than a rectangular upholstered panel. Both sides climb above the center before sweeping inward, making the shape visible even with pillows covering much of the lower section. Nailhead trim repeats every change in the perimeter, drawing attention back to the curves rather than letting them disappear into the patterned fabric. Finished Headboard Became the Bedroom’s Largest Pattern @Tracy Laverty Coral fabric covers enough wall space to function as more than a padded surface behind the bed. Its white pattern sits against blue walls and connects with coral details used across the bedding. Underneath, the structure remains the same cut piece of OSB shown at the beginning: shaped first, padded next, then hidden beneath fabric and trim. OSB Created the Shape Without a Furniture Frame @Tracy Laverty Finished headboard gets its height and curved silhouette without a conventional upholstered furniture frame. OSB supplies the broad backing, two 2×4 supports establish its position, and layers added to the front create the upholstered finish. @Tracy Laverty Project materials included two yards of fabric along with batting and nailhead trim, turning the rough cutout into a padded headboard sized for the bed.
