Old concrete steps gave this front porch plenty of width, but chipped paint and a pitted surface left the entrance looking unfinished. Covering the center with an outdoor runner could have hidden some of it, but paint offered another option. @Clover House Clover House painted the concrete white, then created a wide black strip down the center with narrow white borders. From the yard, the design looks like a stair runner laid across each tread, yet nothing sits on top of the concrete. Getting that effect depended on carrying the same proportions across every rise and turn of the steps. Tape established the shape, black paint filled the center, and small corrections along the edges turned a rough concrete staircase into a graphic feature. White Paint Covered the Old Concrete @Clover House Chipping paint had to go before the runner design could take shape. The existing coating was not intended for porch use, while pits, cracks, and holes across the old concrete made the surface harder to cover. @Clover House White textured porch and patio floor paint created the new base. Two heavy coats went across the steps, with extra brushwork pushing paint into damaged areas rather than leaving dark gaps behind. Measurements Kept the Runner Centered @Clover House Painting a straight rectangle across a flat landing would have been simple. Stairs introduce horizontal treads, vertical risers, corners, and several changes in direction, so a small measuring error could shift the design as it moves toward the porch. Guide marks went 18 inches in from each side. From those points, additional measurements established the borders that would follow the staircase from top to bottom. Tape Followed Every Turn in the Steps @Clover House Green painter’s tape traced the marked lines across each tread and down each riser. Instead of treating every step as a separate stripe, the taped boundaries connected them into one continuous shape. Two-inch tape reserved the white stripes, while the black portions were designed at three inches around the edges. Pressing the tape against rough concrete was important, though the uneven texture made a perfect seal difficult. Black Paint Changed How the Staircase Reads @Clover House Black exterior paint filled the large center section and the narrow areas beside the taped borders. Two coats covered the white base, with a sponge brush filling pits and chips that the roller missed. Extending the black across both treads and risers creates the visual trick. Viewed from the front, the separate painted surfaces connect into what appears to be one dark runner descending from the porch. Pulling Off the Tape Revealed the White Border @Clover House Once the black paint had dried, removing the green tape exposed narrow white lines on both sides. Those lines separate the dark center from the rest of the white staircase and give the painted section its rug-like outline. The border also follows every corner instead of running as two straight vertical lines. Each change in step depth produces another small turn, reinforcing the impression of fabric wrapping over the stair edges. Rough Concrete Left Some Edges to Fix @Clover House Painter’s tape could not seal every pit in the concrete. Black paint reached beneath parts of it, leaving uneven spots along lines that looked crisp from farther away. A small sponge brush and white paint corrected those areas by hand. The touch-ups mattered because the narrow border is one of the details that makes the center section read as a separate runner rather than a block of black paint. Pumpkins and Mums Filled the White Sides @Clover House The finished design leaves broad white sections on both sides of the black center. Rather than leaving those areas empty, pumpkins, mums, and smaller pots sit along one side without covering the painted runner. Orange and yellow fall colors also stand out against the black-and-white staircase, while the center remains clear for walking. From the Yard, the Paint Looks Like a Stair Runner @Clover House Seen with the full porch, the black section connects the lawn to the gray porch floor and echoes the dark columns, ceiling, and trim above. White borders tie it back to the painted brick bases and white details across the house. Nothing had to be attached to the concrete to create that division. What appears from a distance to be a black runner is the staircase itself, divided with measurements, tape, and two paint colors.
